I Must Be Dreaming, How Quickly We Forget:
Every so often, I’ll ride a recreational group ride. I love the comraderie of cyclists,
the talk, the last minute pumps of air, the clicking in, and the easy drifting out as a peloton.
“I miss riding in a group,” I’ll think to myself.Be careful when riding in a group.

daverender writes:On a spring ride last year, someone said to me, "Gee, Dave. Aren't you a little overdressed?" My response: "THE GRID DON'T LIE." Later as we started out, she started complaining how cool and breezy it was - wished she'd worn some pants and a jacket. Moral? THE GRID DON'T LIE.
A while back when I started commuting to work all year around, I often had a hard time figuring out what I needed to wear. I decided to start making notes of my garb during various weather conditions. Being a "grid guy," I drafted a table with temperature ranges across the top (0-5 degrees, 5-10, 10-15, etc.). Down the left column, I wrote in any piece of clothing I wore (short-sleeve shirt, LS shirt(s), jacket, gloves, helmet shell, light pants, heavier pants, long johns, etc.). As I rode throughout the months that year, I always logged in what clothes I was wearing by marking an "X" down the column for that temperature. If it was windy I maybe added a layer. As the grid filled in, it became easier to figure out what to wear. Sometimes things needed to be tweaked a bit, but by the end of the year, the grid was complete and extremely helpful.
So when people bust on me for overdressing, I simply shout, hey "THE GRID DON'T LIE!" Throughout the years I've shared my concept with fellow riders who really liked the idea and actually encouraged me to write a newsletter article (hence this!). If any of you would like to see a copy of my grid or get a blank one to use as a template, feel free to contact me at drender@nycap.rr.com.

Hi,
I am doing a research on competitive and recreational cycling. I found your contact information on the Web page of the League of American Bicyclists. Since you are a representative of your cycling club or team, I suppose that you are in touch with recreational and competitive cyclists.
I am a marketing researcher and I am exploring the lifestyles, motivations and cycling habits of cyclists of all levels and abilities in order to develop innovative cycling training plans. I would very much appreciate if you could transfer this email to the cyclists of your club or team.
Each participant in the survey has the chance to win one of our gift certificates worth $150 which can be used to purchase cycling apparel like clothing, helmets, eyewear, etc. at www.ekoistore.com
The data obtained will only be used for statistical analysis, is not linked to individual respondents and will not be used for solicitation. If you are interested, I will communicate the results of my study to you. The results will improve your understanding of the lifestyles, motivations and habits of cyclists of all levels.
For my research to be valid, I need the input of completive athletes as well as recreational cyclists. I hope to recruit cyclists for my questionnaire with your help. Thank you very much for your collaboration.
Run the chance to win one of our gift certificates for cycling apparel worth $150.

Thank you for your participation and for forwarding this invitation to other recreational or competitive cyclists.
If you have any questions about my research project, please contact me by email.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am conducting a study that investigates how cyclists value different forms of bicycle transportation networks. I am administering an online survey to individuals who are at least 18 years old, own a bicycle, and live in the United States. I am conducting this research in the hopes that it can help policy makers and city planners better understand cyclist’s preferences when it comes to where they ride their bicycles.
I am writing to you to see if your organization would be interested in helping me recruit participants. The survey will gather information about how individuals value different transportation networks as well as some basic demographic data similar to what you would see on the US Census. The survey will only take about 12 minutes to complete. Individuals who complete my survey can enter to win one of ten Amazon gift cards. I will be raffling off two $100 gift cards four $50 gift cards, and four $25 gift cards. Entering this raffle is completely voluntary.
I will be extremely grateful if you can help me by sharing a link to the survey portal where my survey is being administered. The best way to do this is by emailing your members directly with the link. I think it could also be helpful to post the link on your website, blog, and/or social media site (Facebook or Twitter). This project has a very short timeline, the survey will be open from now until April 5th, and I need to gather as many responses as possible so your help will be greatly appreciated!
Here is the survey link:

I would love to answer any questions you may have about this process. Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions about sharing this survey or about my research. Thank you so much for your time and willingness to participate in my research!
Sincerely,
Cassie Finer

2013 SARATOGA TOUR DE CURE NEWS:
Yeah, it’s cycling season once again!!! Come ride with us. Are you looking for the “ride of your life” this spring??? If so, why not join your club’s team, Team Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club, and ride in the 2013 Saratoga Tour De Cure for diabetes. Challenge yourself, ride for a good cause, and come away feeling fulfilled…start a “chain reaction”, this year’s theme.
This year’s tour takes place Sunday June 2nd from the Saratoga Springs H.S. Outdoor routes consist of the following distances: 10, 25, 50, 65, and 100 miles. Don’t own a bike? Uncomfortable riding on the road? Not a problem. The Saratoga Tour offers an indoor spin tour as an alternative to its road tour.
To Register: Go to diabetes.org/saratoga. Once there, click Register, then click Join an Existing Team. In the box next to Team Name type Mohawk Hudson Cycling Team, hit Search, then follow the registration directions. Registration fee is $25 per person with a minimum fund-raising requirement of $200. T-shirts are given to all registrants collecting $200 with additional prices earned with donations of $250 and up. The more you collect, the bigger your prize. Cyclists who ride with diabetes can register as Red Riders and will be given a free Red Jersey for doing so. Wear the jersey during the Tour and hear the chants of support to the tune of “Go Red Rider Go” from other riders and onlookers.
