Bicyclist who struck mail van in Saratoga Springs dies from injuries

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- A bicyclist who ran into a U.S. Mail delivery van late Monday morning at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Inlander Road in Saratoga Springs has died from his injuries, police say.

63-year old Kenneth Phelps, of Malta, died around 5 p.m. Tuesday at Albany Medical Center, according to Saratoga Springs Police Lt. John Catone.

Police say they received a call around 11:30 a.m. Monday regarding the accident, in which Phelps struck the back of the U.S. Mail delivery van, which was stopping at mail boxes to make deliveries.

When police arrived, Phelps was on the side of the road being tended to by witnesses before EMS arrived and transported him to Saratoga Hospital for treatment.

After a short time, Phelps was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in critical condition.

Tuesday, police said their investigation into the accident shows that the postal vehicle was at a complete stop with its flashers on when Phelps ran into the van.

It is not known what, whether it be a distraction or medical issue, caused Phelps to strike the vehicle.

Catone says no tickets will be issued to the driver of the delivery van at this time.
