Going, going, gone!

This year has been especially well suited to getting in a bunch of late season rides and if you haven't taken advantage of them then your opportunities are certainly going, going... but not yet gone. The roads are still in good shape without too much grit on the shoulders, that salty "dust" or water all over from melting snow. The daylight will be longer after Dec. 21, so more chances for after work rides if you get out early enough.

Even with the colder weather I was able to get in three road rides this week for about 70 miles total. Today was a "mile per degree" ride - when I left midday it was 22-degrees, sunny with a light breeze and still no snow. This is the coldest I've attempted a ride and I'm sure all the black clothing I had on helped to keep me reasonably warm. Somewhere around mile 18 I discovered that the remaining water in my bottle was half frozen.

If you put your bike away for the season then it's a good time to think about getting it ready for next season so the first warm day in March/April you'll be ready to go. Bike shops should easily be able to get you in for a tune up or if you do your own work maybe you'll get some gift certificates to buy new tools and goodies.
